The fruit is a red drupe 4–6 millimeters (0.16–0.24 in) in diameter. The flowers are small and greenish-white with four petals. They contain caffeine (known in some parts of the world as mateine) and related xanthine alkaloids, and are harvested commercially. The leaves are often called yerba (Spanish) or erva (Portuguese), both of which mean "herb". The leaves are evergreen, 7–110 millimeters (0.3–4.3 in) long and 30–55 millimeters (1.2–2.2 in) wide, with serrated margins. Ilex paraguariensis begins as a shrub and then matures to a tree, growing up to 15 meters (49 ft) tall. If the tonic syllable were the last one, the accent would be required, as maté. In both Spanish and Portuguese, the first syllable of mate (plant) is the tonic one, and the word does not require a written accent. There are no variations in spelling of mate (the plant) in Spanish. Indeed, the word maté in Spanish has a completely different meaning in Spanish: maté is understood as being the first person past tense conjugation of matar ('to kill') and means 'I killed'. The addition of the acute accent over the final "e", in the Anglo spelling, was likely added as a hypercorrection to indicate that the final "-é" is not silent, as in "mate" (partner or friend). In English, both the spellings mate and maté are used to refer to the plant or beverage however, the latter spelling is incorrect-in both Spanish and Portuguese-as it would put the stress on the second syllable, while the word is correctly pronounced with the stress on the first syllable (like "máte"). Most people, colloquially, call both the plant and the beverage by the word mate. While chá mate is made with roasted leaves, the other drinks are made with raw or lightly toasted green leaves, and are very popular in the south and center-west of the country. The drinks are usually called chimarrão (hot traditionally served in a gourd), tereré (cold traditionally served in a bull horn), or chá mate (hot or cold lit. The Portuguese name for the plant is pronounced variously as, in the areas of traditional consumption. Yerba mate, therefore, originally translated as literally the 'gourd herb' i.e., the herb one drinks from a gourd. ![]() In Argentina, yerba refers exclusively to the yerba mate plant. It may also be used in reference to marijuana ( Cannabis sativa). Yerba may be understood as 'herb', but also as 'grass' or 'weed'. The word hierba is Spanish for 'herb', yerba is the variant spelling of hierba, used throughout Latin America. The accent on the word mAte is on the first syllable. The pronunciation of yerba mate in Spanish is. The word mate is used in modern Portuguese and Spanish. Mate is from the Quechua mati, a word that means 'container for a drink' and 'infusion of an herb', as well as 'gourd'. Congonha, in Portuguese, a term describing several herb species, is derived from the Tupí expression kõ'gõi, meaning something like 'what keeps us alive', but is rarely used nowadays. ![]() The name given to the plant in the Guaraní language (of the indigenous people who first used mate) is ka'a, which has the same meaning as 'herb'. Yerba mate can now be found worldwide in various energy drinks as well as being sold as a bottled or canned iced tea. It has also become popular in the Druze and Alawite community in the Levant, especially in Syria and Lebanon, where it is imported from Paraguay and Argentina, thanks to 19th-century Syrian immigrants to Argentina. Mate is traditionally consumed in central and southern regions of South America, primarily in Paraguay, as well as in Argentina, Uruguay, Southern Brazil, the Gran Chaco of Bolivia, and southern Chile. After the Jesuits discovered its commercialization potential, yerba mate became widespread throughout the province and even elsewhere in the Spanish Crown. ![]() Its consumption was exclusive to the natives of only two regions of the territory that today is Paraguay, more specifically the departments of Amambay and Alto Paraná. The indigenous Guaraní and some Tupí communities (whose territory covered present-day Paraguay) first cultivated and consumed yerba mate prior to European colonization of the Americas. Both the plant and the beverage contain caffeine. The leaves of the plant can be steeped in hot water to make a beverage known as mate. It was named by the French botanist Augustin Saint-Hilaire. Yerba mate or yerba-maté ( Ilex paraguariensis from Spanish Portuguese: erva-mate, Portuguese pronunciation: or Guarani: ka'a, IPA: ) is a plant species of the holly genus Ilex native to South America.

![]() ![]() By extension, writing, note-taking, and direction following can be adversely affected. The listener may be overwhelmed by the amount of verbal information flooding the system, thereby adversely affecting comprehension skills. As listening conditions become more difficult, the student risks excessive auditory fatigue and reduced listening comprehension (Bellis, 2003 Bellis & Ferre, 1999 Burns, 2013 Ferre, 1997 Geffner, 2007 Tazeau & Hamaguchi, 2013).ĭeficient binaural processing is characterized by difficulty synthesizing, manipulating, and/or attaching meaning to multiple incoming auditory targets. Even under optimal listening conditions, this student's auditory system is working harder than normal to analyze incoming acoustic information. Inefficient central hearing can adversely affect all aspects of language development, including acquisition of age-appropriate vocabulary, morphology, syntax, semantics, and/or a second verbal language. Thus, secondary deficits in phonologic processing, reading decoding and comprehension, and spelling are common. A student who does not "hear" the sounds of speech efficiently will struggle to attach meaning to those sounds. Substantial research has indicated that a deficit in any of the central auditory processes can co-exist with or be a significant contributing factor to other functional deficits, including learning disabilities, speech-language impairment, attention deficit, or developmental disabilities (Bellis, 2003 Burns, 2013 Ferre & Wilber, 1986 Geffner, 2007 Jerger, Martin, & Jerger, 1987 Tillery, Katz, & Keller, 2000).ĭeficits in auditory discrimination are the result of inefficient extraction of the fine acoustic cues in the speech signal. The central auditory processes identified to date broadly fall into one of three types: auditory discrimination, binaural processing, and temporal processing. This interprofessional team is able to clarify the nature of the listener's functional impairment and develop deficit-specific intervention plans to reduce or resolve the auditory impairment, improve affected communicative and academic skill sets, and minimize the impact of the processing disorder on the student's life.Ĭentral auditory processing disorders (CAPDs) are breakdowns in the acoustic components of the processing continuum, specifically deficiencies in the brain's ability to use auditory information sent to it from the peripheral auditory system (i.e., outer, inner, middle ears and the auditory nerve). Audiologists diagnose central auditory processing deficits by using assessment tools designed to maximize the load on the auditory system while minimizing the influence of other neurocognitive skills (e.g., attention, receptive language). Psychologists, educational specialists, and other professionals obtain information regarding a client's academic achievement and everyday listening skills. Speech-language pathologists use formal and informal tools to examine phonologic, linguistic, and executive aspects along the continuum. Because breakdowns along the processing continuum adversely affect academics and/or communication, audiologists and speech-language pathologists play important roles in the implementation of the Core, assisting both students and teachers in meeting these goals. The Core, as it has come to be known, currently includes standards for math and English language arts, with the latter including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language usage (National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, Council of Chief State School Officers, 2010). The Common Core State Standards, now adopted by 44 states, represent learning goals for students in grades K–12 designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to begin post-secondary education and/or to enter the workforce. Audiologists and speech-language pathologists work together to assess deficit areas, describe impact, and provide intervention. Breakdowns along this continuum can affect a listener at school, in the home, and in social communication situations. This peripheral-to-central continuum consists of acoustic and related phonologic, linguistic, and cognitive-communicative skills that enable us to communicate successfully, achieve academically, and maintain our sense of self. Auditory processing is a true process that begins at the ear and ends when we execute a response. ![]() Most models have NFC technology or QR codes. Of course, all of the levels are completely original as well. It should be noted that Ninja Gaiden for the Master system has an entirely new storyline and features characters that are not connected to previous Ninja Gaiden games. Generally speaking, the gameplay in the Master System is even faster than it was on the NES. In the Master System version, Ryu can hang off of tree branches or ledges, and he has to bounce off of walls instead of clinging to them like a monkey. The Master System version shares many gameplay elements with its NES predecessor, but it also introduces many unique game mechanics. In addition to the endless hordes of enemies, the series is also well-known for tricky platforming sections. Ryu arms himself with a sword and can also utilize a host of special weapons that includes everything from throwing stars to fire wheels. The gameplay in Ninja Gaiden is centered around a ninja named Ryu Hayabusa. However, the Master System version deserves some recognition too. When people think of the series, they usually think of the NES. The Ninja Gaiden games rank right up there among the best action games from the 8-bit era. Why throw a cross at someone or bombard them with holy water when you can shoot them with a handgun or throw a real bomb at them? It doesn’t earn a lot of points for innovation, but Master of Darkness is a great action/adventure game. (Thankfully, this knife can be upgraded to a rapier or a battle axe.) And since the game has a more contemporary setting than Castlevania does, Master of Darkness also features more contemporary weapons. Instead of arming himself with a whip, the psychologist arms himself with a knife. ![]() Instead of a vampire hunter battling Dracula in Transylvania, the game focuses on a psychologist who is battling Dracula in London. It’s not like Master of Darkness doesn’t bring anything new to the table, though. A distinct Castlevania influence can also be seen in the game’s graphics, music, and overall level structure. The game also contains an assortment of sub-weapons, items hidden inside of walls, and a ridiculous amount of staircases to climb. For example, Master of Darkness requires players to battle onslaughts of bats and zombies while visiting a variety of spooky environments like cemeteries and castles. Master of Darkness is the closest thing Master System owners had to Castlevania, and the similarities between the games are quite astounding. ![]() Overall the surf is very consistent for long boarding and SUP and less consistent for short boarding.
